Maharashtra CHO Eligibility 2026: Qualification, Age Limit, Council Registration, CCH Rules & Selection Conditions

Maharashtra CHO Eligibility 2026: Qualification, Age Limit, Council Registration, CCH Rules & Selection Conditions

Maharashtra is one of the most active states in implementing the Health & Wellness Centre (HWC) model under the National Health Mission (NHM). As a result, the state regularly recruits Community Health Officers (CHOs) to manage Sub-Health Centres and Ayushman Arogya Mandirs.

However, Maharashtra’s CHO eligibility is often misunderstood because:

• It may allow multiple qualification routes • Council registration rules are strict • Language and domicile expectations can exist • Contract rules differ from North Indian states

This guide explains exactly how eligibility works in Maharashtra, what usually applies, and what aspirants must verify before applying.

1. Educational Qualification - Who Can Apply

Maharashtra generally follows a multi-pathway eligibility model for CHO recruitment.

Typically Accepted Qualifications

In most recruitment cycles, the following are considered:

✔ B.Sc Nursing ✔ Post Basic B.Sc Nursing ✔ GNM (in some cycles, with conditions) ✔ AYUSH degrees (BAMS / BHMS / BUMS) in some cycles

However, unlike states like UP, Maharashtra often gives preference to nursing-qualified candidates for CHO roles.

2. Community Health Training / Bridge Course Requirement

This is a critical part of CHO eligibility that many candidates ignore.

CHO is not a hospital staff nurse role. It is a public health leadership role at the grassroots level. That’s why Maharashtra often requires:

• Community health exposure • Public health training • Or a recognized bridge program

What This Means in Practice

If your degree already includes community health subjects (as most B.Sc Nursing programs do), that usually satisfies the condition.

If you are a GNM candidate, Maharashtra may require:

• A bridge course • Or additional public health training • Or specific eligibility language in the notification

This changes by cycle - so it must always be checked.

3. Nursing Council Registration Rules

Maharashtra is strict about professional registration.

To be eligible, you must have:

✔ Valid registration with Maharashtra Nursing Council (MNC) OR ✔ Valid registration with another State Nursing Council + proof of migration to Maharashtra council (if allowed)

Some recruitment cycles allow:

• Out-of-state registration at the time of application • But require Maharashtra council registration before joining

If you miss this step, you can lose the job even after selection.

4. Age Limit & Relaxations

Maharashtra CHO age limits usually fall in this band:

Minimum: 18-21 years Maximum: 38-40 years

Relaxations generally apply for:

• SC / ST • OBC • PwBD • Ex-servicemen

Exact limits depend on the year’s notification.

5. Experience Requirement

Experience is usually not mandatory for Maharashtra CHO.

However:

• Some cycles give weightage for rural experience • Public health exposure may be preferred • GNM candidates may benefit from experience

Experience can improve selection chances, but it is usually not a strict eligibility requirement.

6. Domicile & Language Expectations

Maharashtra does not always impose a strict domicile rule.

However:

• Knowledge of Marathi can be expected • Rural posting readiness is assumed • Locals may be preferred in tie-breaking

These are often mentioned in instructions rather than eligibility, but they still matter.

7. Who Is Commonly Rejected

Applicants are often rejected in Maharashtra CHO recruitments because:

❌ No valid nursing council registration ❌ GNM without required bridge/public health training ❌ Age miscalculated ❌ Document mismatch ❌ Wrong category certificate ❌ Missing experience proof (when asked)
